When people ask me what AI search optimization is, I give them the simplest version I can: it is leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok, Claude and Gemini, and having your business show up in the top three when your prospects are searching for what you do.
Think of these tools as another search engine. Your customers are using them to research, compare and shortlist. If you are not mentioned in those answers, you could be the absolute best at everything you do, and you will never be discovered.
The Goal: Be in the Top Three, and Link Back to a Site That Converts
AI assistants rarely hand someone a list of ten blue links. They tend to give a short, confident answer, and that usually means a handful of names. So the goal of AI search optimization is two things working together:
- Be one of the businesses the AI names. When someone asks for the best option in your category in Calgary, you want to be in that top three.
- Link back to a website that converts. Being mentioned is only half the job. When someone clicks through, your website has to turn that interest into a call, a booking or a quote request.
The second half gets forgotten. We have written before about why so many Calgary websites don't convert, and that problem does not disappear because the visitor came from ChatGPT instead of Google.
What AI Search Optimization Isn't
It isn't optional anymore
From the conversations I have with business owners, most are still pretty behind. A lot of them simply do not think AI search is necessary for their business yet. Meanwhile, their customers are already asking AI tools for recommendations.
It isn't separate from your local signals
One of the biggest myths I hear is that local signals do not matter for AI. They do. Things like a well-maintained Google My Business listing with a steady stream of reviews, and posting regularly on LinkedIn, all give AI the signal that you exist, that you are good at what you do, and that clients can trust you. AI tools are looking for evidence. Your listings, reviews and posts are that evidence.
It isn't a replacement for SEO
AI search optimization builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it. If you want the full comparison, we cover it in GEO vs SEO: what's the difference and why you need both. The short version: your site still needs the fundamentals, and AI visibility is the next layer on top.
It isn't something most owners know how to do on their own
This is not a criticism. Many owners just don't know how to do any of this, and that is fair. It is new, it changes quickly, and it touches your website, your listings, your content and your social channels all at once. That is exactly why it helps to have a team that is doing it every day.
How AI Decides Who to Recommend
You do not need to understand every technical detail, but it helps to know what AI tools are looking for. In my experience, the businesses that show up are the ones that give AI clear, consistent signals:
- Your website answers real questions. People now ask AI full questions, sometimes whole conversations. When the answers to those questions live on your website, it is easier for AI to pick your site over a competitor's.
- Your Google Business Profile is active. A complete profile with recent reviews is one of the clearest trust signals you can send. Our team explains how in Google Business Profile optimization for Calgary companies.
- Your pages are structured. Structured data and clear answer sections help machines read your page correctly. If that sounds technical, start with our guide to schema markup for local SEO in Calgary.
- You show up in more than one place. LinkedIn posts, Google Business Profile posts and your blog all reinforcing the same expertise tell AI that you are a real, active, trustworthy business.
The First Step Most Calgary Businesses Should Take
If you only do one thing after reading this, my advice is simple: get more Google reviews.
It is the easiest place to start, it helps you in regular Google search and on Google Maps, and it is one of the trust signals AI tools lean on when deciding who to recommend. Ask your happy customers, make it easy for them with a direct link, and keep it steady rather than doing one big push and stopping.
What to Ask Before You Hire Anyone for AI Search
A lot of agencies are now saying they "do AI." Before you sign anything, ask them directly:
- Can you actually optimize businesses for AI search?
- Can you give me real examples of how you have done that?
- What would your plan be to get me there?
- How long would that take?
Any provider worth hiring should be able to answer all four clearly. Our article on how to choose the right Calgary SEO company has more questions worth asking.

At StyleLabs, AI search optimization is part of how we build and market websites on our own SamurAI platform. We look at your website, your listings, your reviews and your content together, because that is how AI looks at your business.
